I was lucky enough to see the first showing on Saturday of “The Oviatt Building,” Marc Chevalier and Seth Shulman’s tribute to the 1920s landmark on South Olive Street.
“Oviatt” is first and last a labor of love. As Chevalier told the audience at the Egyptian Theatre, the movie was done on a shoestring with gracious assistance by people who in some way were involved with the building’s history. The score of vintage tunes (and there’s lots of music in the picture) is by Mora’s Modern Rhythmists, with additional music by Shulman.
As with many premieres, the obvious question is when it will be shown again. “Oviatt” is a fine addition to the body of quirky, heartfelt Los Angeles documentaries that includes “Shotgun Freeway” and “L.A. Plays Itself.”
